Code Kevudah and DataCamp Donates: Empowering Women in Tech Through Data Science Education
Code Kevudah aims to normalize and promote computer science education for women in the Orthodox Jewish community, an overlooked source of potential technology talent. We enable a variety of programs towards this goal, including technology training, hackathons, and mentors for independent learning and job placement.
DataCamp Donates and Code Kevudah have partnered to provide students with access to learn valuable skills that can lead to meaningful careers, entirely for free!
Code Kevudah offers live instruction that complements DataCamp as well as asynchronous access to DataCamp Learn, Workspace, and Certification. Code Kevudah’s Data Science and Analytics Program prepares students for careers in business intelligence, data engineering, database development, and other data-related fields. Code Kevudah CONNEX is a self-directed program where participants gain free access to coding education resources and get paired with a mentor or study buddy to support their learning journey.
Monthly, Code Kevudah raffled off a prize. To enter the raffle, participants must complete challenges like spending at least 4 hours on the platform or earning over 1,000 XP. A slight nudge of competitive fun helps learners feel united despite being located in separate locales. We have representatives from different states in the United States and from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Israel.
The feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, indicating that the partnership has provided tremendous benefit.
Nicole, an educator, and an instructional coach who had never heard of DataCamp before Code Kevudah’s summer bootcamp, was able to score in the 98th percentile in SQL, which inspired her to challenge herself to outdo expectations. She is now being considered for a specialized data analyst position.
Meira started her career in design and has been freelancing in graphic design for five years. When she was looking for new jobs in design, it occurred to her that many of her skills can be transferred into a more lucrative field in tech. She took her ambition to learn new things and within a span of three months, she completed the Data Analyst in SQL track. She likes how the course has made her encounter many different functions and data manipulation methods from various angles. Gradually, she became more comfortable and knowledgeable in SQL joins, subqueries, and correlated subqueries. “I am enjoying how the DataCamp platform has incredible UX design and leverages addictive motivators for course completion like the little green bars that slowly fill up at the bottom of the page as you complete a course.”
Meira is confident in her path to getting a job in data analysis. In her own words: “Like many others, I started eyeing tech because of its high demand and competitive pay. When I found out there was a way for me to break into data science with no cost to me, I felt so grateful, it makes me feel like tearing up. I am so enjoying learning the courses on DataCamp, which does such an excellent job at taking someone with no knowledge in this field to understanding complicated tables and how to filter and manipulate them. I have completed three and a half courses of Data Analyst with R, and I am really enjoying it. Learning R has given me an introduction to code, which is not as cryptic as I thought! Having that confidence alone — that I can successfully understand a computer programming language — is a game-changer. Making a career change at my stage, in my early 30’s, with four little kids, is a high stakes endeavor. I can’t afford to invest a ton of money or time into a computer science degree. To be able to learn online through DataCamp at no cost is just…such a gift. Thank you.”
Esther, who previously used other online coding platforms to learn Python, found the learning experience on DataCamp to be superior. She was excited to see that they have courses on Deep Learning and Machine Learning. “I think that it’s a great platform for beginners,” she says. Without this opportunity, she would not have been able to confirm her decision to transition from wet lab research to biomedical data science.
Fradel, a music teacher, completed the Data Analytics course in three months and was subsequently hired as a Data Analyst at a manufacturing company. Before her encounter with an ad for Code Kevudah’s 12-week data analytics course in Spring of 2022, she did not imagine that she could be powering influential analyses. She was data-driven before she heard of the term. Whenever someone mentioned choosing one product over another for health reasons, Fradel was always curious about the research and wanted to understand the validity of the study. She would inquire, “How many people were tested? What impacted the results?” Her inquisitive mind was a great fit for the data analytics field.
Fradel spent at least ten hours each week covering a lot of ground on DataCamp. After three months, she was able to secure a data engineering internship, which led to her current position as a data analyst. And then there’s Leah, who joined the Spring 2022 class that covered SQL and Power BI while in twelfth grade, secured a job as a Data Analyst just three months after graduating high school.
Sarah, an epidemiologist, found DataCamp user-friendly and is using it to be on the path to qualify for jobs that are more data management-heavy. Ruchy finds DataCamp to be an enjoyable complement to her data science studies in college. “I find with DataCamp it is really helping me improve my speed and efficiency. Especially since the exercises are so short, I can do them on the go or whenever I have a few extra minutes.”
Chaya, who has a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and was working as a Payroll Coordinator, used her newfound knowledge to create a Power BI dashboard that displayed meaningful insights on employee and payroll information, and was hired as a Data Analyst. Chassi, with no formal college education, used skills acquired in the Spring ’22 Data Science class to create a regression model that helped her company find the optimal location for a new warehouse. Blimie has been channeling her hobby into a small creative online business for over a decade. She learned how to analyze her own data to glean insights such as which category of products are most popular and which channel brings the most sales. These success stories showcase the impact of Code Kevudah and DataCamp Donate’s partnership on students’ lives.
